The problem

A QuickBooks Online Transaction List or Xero Account Transactions export arrives with a report title across the top, totals mixed in with real rows, -Split- where an account should be, noisy payee names and ambiguous dates. Your accountant has to clean it before they can use it.

How it works

  1. Export a CSV from QuickBooks Online (Transaction List or Journal) or Xero (Account Transactions or Bank Transactions).
  2. Drop it into BooksExport Clean in your browser.
  3. Choose US (MM/DD) or UK (DD/MM) dates if the file has slash dates. Download stays disabled until you pick.
  4. Review the cleaned preview and warnings.
  5. Download the cleaned CSV and changelog and send them to your accountant.

What you get

  • Report headers, totals and junk rows stripped
  • ISO dates and normalized amounts
  • -Split- cleared and flagged as split_unresolved instead of guessed
  • Unbalanced journal entries and multicurrency gaps flagged in warnings
  • Common payee noise stripped, with the original kept in raw_payee

Who it's for

  • Small businesses handing a year of transactions to an accountant
  • Bookkeepers who receive messy QuickBooks Online or Xero exports

Limits: what it doesn't do

  • No login, OAuth or API connection to QuickBooks or Xero
  • Generic bank statement CSVs are refused on purpose
  • It does not fix unbalanced journal entries or invent FX rates
  • A formatting aid only, not tax or accounting advice

FAQ

Does BooksExport Clean log into QuickBooks or Xero?

No. There is no login, no OAuth and no API. You export a CSV yourself, drop it in and download a cleaned CSV.

Why do I have to pick US or UK dates?

Slash dates like 03/04/2025 are ambiguous, so the app will not guess. Until you choose US (MM/DD) or UK (DD/MM), Download stays disabled.

What happens to -Split-?

The cell is cleared and split_unresolved is set to true (also listed in warnings). The tool does not invent the other side of the split.

Will it fix an unbalanced journal entry?

No. Unbalanced entries are flagged in the warnings and changelog. Amounts are not changed to force a balance.

Why was my bank statement refused?

Generic bank exports (Date, Description, Amount, Balance) are out of scope on purpose. This tool cleans books exports from QuickBooks Online and Xero.

Is this tax or accounting advice?

No. It is a formatting aid for accountant handoff. Your accountant still owns classification and tax treatment.

Is it a subscription?

No. It costs $8, paid once on Gumroad. See the product page on Gumroad for its refund policy.
